artist's statement

My art is based on images from my imagination, mental short hand for experiences, they incubate in silence, while my mind turns to other matters.
In time, they change and mature and even when I paint them, they turn into something altogether different from my intentions. I welcome this unpredictable aspect of the creative process and how it enhances my work.
When the sheep in the Sheep Series first appeared, for example, they were on canvas. Eventually, they took charge and herded themselves onto cardboard where their personalities grew increasingly individualistic.
Sheep have a number of archetypal meanings, rebirth, sacrifice, conformity and so forth, but they did not inspire me to create them. What did, however, was a perspective that allowed me to see the potential for whimsy and personality in their image. Even the most humdrum of sheep can hold charm and interest. Finally, the sheep theme culminated in a large installation piece entitled Route 66.
I am currently at work on a new series of paintings which marry two unlikely elements, simple newsprint with complex imagery. These works are watercolor and gouache with collage on a newsprint base and are influenced my mythical themes and human archetypes.
